Discussion: Legendary TR Basketball Coach Joe Small

05/12/2012 22:43

Former and current Travelers Rest High School basketball players should mark May 15th on their calendars and be sure to attend the 7 pm meeting of the Travelers Rest Historical Society's meeting.  This month's meeting features "Memories Of Coach Joe Small."  Former TR basketball players Walt Cottingham and former high school coaches Harvey Choplin and Jim Mattos will share their memories of Coach Small.  Cottingham played for Small in the 1970's while Harvey Choplin started his coaching career as an assistant coach under Coach Small.  Choplin replaced the legendary coach when Small retired.  Mattos was probably one of Small's greatest rival coaches.  Mattos was head coach at Berea High School and their two teams battled each other in countless heated contests through the years.  Small started his coaching career at Berea High School in the 1950's and was lured to Travelers Rest by Chico Bolin.  Small built TR's basketball team into a dynasty as he racked up 449 career victories.  The gymnasium at the school carries his name today.

The meeting will begin at 7 pm  and will be held at the Travelers Rest City Hall.
