The Monitor Newspaper is the independent newspaper of Northern Greenville County, South Carolina, proudly defending your right to know since our first edition was published in 1970.

Our History

In 1970 Larry Atkins operated a small printing business in Marietta, SC when the local basketball team at Slater-Marietta High School was enroute to a state championship.  Many people in the area felt the daily newspaper in Greenville wasn't providing the basketball team with the coverage it deserved.  Atkins printed a small one page news flyer proclaiming the success of the Slater-Marietta Green Wave.  After the page was published and distributed around the community, the owner of a Marietta grocery store approached Atkins and offered to purchase back page advertising for his store if Atkins would continue the news flyer.  The Monitor was born.

As time rolled The Monitor grew from a single page flyer to a tabloid size paper and from there to a weekly two second full sized newspaper.  Circulation grew from Marietta to Travelers Rest and the paper's popularity swelled across Greenville County and upstate South Carolina.  Forever the champion of the underdog, The Monitor has been and forever will be, a defender of the rights of our public and the exposer of corrutpion.
